Georgia Said It Pulled Out Of South Ossetia
Georgia has withdrawn forces from breakaway South Ossetia, spokesman of Georgian Interior Ministry Shota Utiashvili told Reuters. The agency also referred to a witness, who saw the withdrawal of column with heavy artillery.
But Vladimir Ivanov, who is the aide to Russia's peacekeepers commander, refuted that allegation, Interfax news agency reported.
"The outposts of peacekeepers report the presence of Georgia's force units, the presence of artillery and armored vehicles," Ivanov said.
According to Georgia's National Security Council Secretary Alexander Lomaia, the troops moved to new positions after air attacks of Russia's warplanes. The troops have been redeployed "because of the heavy civilian casualties Georgia has suffered," Lomaia said as quoted by Reuters.
Georgia's assault on South Ossetia's capital Tskhinvali rased to the ground that city, which residents – women, children, the aged – have been hiding in cellars for a few days without gas and electricity supplies, suffering from thirst and food shortage.
