Churkin Lays Portion of Blame on the UN Security Council
The situation in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict zone became possible because of the UN Security Council’s failure to prevent them, Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin told that body at its second session in 24 hours devoted to that conflict. According to Churkin, the Council did not devote sufficient attention to the events unfolding there.
The Russian diplomat noted that, at present, Russian citizens are suffering from Georgia’s actions. He especially stressed that Russia’s presence in Georgia was and is completely legal as it fulfills its peacekeeping mission in accordance with international agreements. The Georgian representative at the United Nations accused Russia of a full-scale invasion and denied reports that Georgian peacekeepers attacked Russian peacekeepers. The Georgian representative called on Russia to cease military activity and begin negotiations.

Georgian representative to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Viktor Dolidze accused Russia of “open military aggression” in South Ossetia. He spoke before a closed session of that organization. Russian representative to the OSCE Vladimir Voronkov denied Russia’s military aggression. “It’s an obvious trick by Georgia to present Russia as one of the sides in the conflict,” he said. “There are two sides in that conflict,” Vorokov continued. “Georgia and South Ossetia. Russia wanted to stop the bloodshed.”
