Russia to Respond to Georgia’s Attack on South Ossetia
Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who is in Beijing now, said that Georgia’s actions against South Ossetia will entail the response, RIA Novosti reported. Putin urged CIS members to close ranks and stop combat actions of Georgia.
“Heavy armed vehicles, artillery and tanks have stepped in and there are victims: the killed, wounded, including amid Russia’s peacekeepers,” RIA Novosti quoted Putin as saying during the meeting with Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbaev. “It’s very sad and very alarming, and will certainly entail the response. Putin is in Beijing, where the Olympic Games open today.
Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev will chair the sitting of RF Security Council members today.
Georgia’s troops, including armored formations, attacked South Ossetia’s capital Tskhinvali overnight. According to Tbilisi, they want to restore constitutional order in South Ossetia and secure safety of all civilians irrespective of their ethnic origin.
Fifteen have been killed in that war already.
