Georgia Says Russian Air Force Su-24's Bombed Its Territory
Three Russian Su-24 airplanes have violated Georgian airspace, the Georgian Interior Ministry has announced. According to information on the ministry’s website, one of the bombers dropped two rockets on the police station in town of Kareli, in the Shida Kartli region adjacent to the unrecognized republic of South Ossetia. The ministry’s website did not provide information about injuries or the extent of damages. Nor did it specify the time at which the incident occurred. The Russian Defense Ministry has not yet commented on the information.
A large-scale military conflict began in the breakaway republic of South Ossetia on the night of August 7. Georgian authorities announced that they would begin an operation to “restore the constitutional order” in the rebellious region. Georgian struck at Ossetian positions using aviation and artillery. By morning, it is reported, Georgian forced had occupied Znaur District in South Ossetia. Information that Georgia has taken Tskhinvali has not been confirmed.
