Georgian Media Report Capture of Tskhinvali
Georgian units have taken control of Tskhinvali, Georgian radio station Imedi reports, citing its own correspondent at the scene. No other sources have confirmed that yet, RIA Novosti information agency notes. Russia’s Channel One quotes Interfax information agency as saying that Georgian forces control only several important high points on the edges of the city. It also reports that shooting in Tskhinvali has now died down.
On the evening of August 7, Georgian authorities announced a ceasefire in the conflict zone. However, shooting was resumed that night. Georgia is using both artillery and aviation for the bombardment of Tskhinvali. Soon after the onslaught began, Georgian peacekeepers commander Mamuka Kurashvili stated that Georgia had begun “an operation to restore the constitutional order” in the unrecognized republic and called on Russian peacekeepers not to intervene.

By the morning of August 8, Georgian units, which contained armored vehicles, had taken control of practically all of Znaur District in South Ossetia. At least 15 people were killed in the fighting, by preliminary data.
