Russia Goes Hi-Tech against Terror
The federal targeted program Antiterror 2009-2012 was approved by the government on August 4 and will be oriented toward prevention, the National Antiterrorism Committee has stated, according to Interfax news agency. Priority will be given to developing new technology and meeting the needs of the units directly fighting terrorism. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin stated on July 4 that the threat of terrorism remains very serious in Russia. He promised to spend tens of billions of rubles to counteract that threat.
In 2005, 717.7 million rubles was spent on the Antiterror targeted program. In 2006, the publicly announced part of the program cost 105 million rubles, and in 2007 85 million rubles was spent on it. Representative of the National Antiterrorism Committee say that most of the funds from the new program will be spent in the North Caucasus.
