Moscow Air Defense on Constant Alert
The Russian Defense Ministry and chief of the general staff of the Russian Air Force have issued an order that all military special command units will be placed on continual alert, chief commander of the Russian Air Force Col. Gen. Alexander Zelin told journalists. “That will make it possible to reinforce air-defense standby forces and free the personnel of military units of decisions that are not relevant to them,” Zelin said.
According to Zelin, the decision to place the forces on full-time alert is due to the threat of terrorist acts using flying apparatus. “For the solution of this problem, the radio technical forces are being equipped with radar stations of new types and automated connections with the Federal Air Navigation Service are being organized for supervision of air conditions,” Zelin said.

Zelin added that the Air Force military special command units will be supplemented with more than 100 new Mi-28N, Ka-52 and Mi-8 helicopters between 2011 and 2015. Mi-24PNhelicopters and Mi-26 heavy transport helicopters will be modernized. Eventually, more than 60 Mi-8MTV5, Mi-28N and Ka-52 helicopters will be added to the force as well.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin spoke about the terrorist threat on Monday when discussing the creation of a new target program, Antiterror, to combat terrorism. He said that it was necessary to raise the level of security of the state, society and every citizen and promised tens of billions of rubles in funding for that task.
