Solzhenitsyn Memorial Begins in Moscow
Funeral ceremonies for Alexander Solzhenitsyn began at 11:00 a.m. on August 5 in Moscow in the memorial hall of the Russian Academy of Sciences new building at 32 Leninsky Prospekt. The hall will be open until late in the evening. Vesti television news channel will broadcast the ceremony.
The service and burial of the writer, who died late in the evening of August 3 at the age of 90, will be held on Wednesday, August 6. In accordance with Solzhenitsyn’s wishes, he will be buried in the cemetery at Donskoi Monastery in Moscow. According to Echo of Moscow radio, the services will begin at 11:00. They will be led by Archbishop of Orekhovo-Zuevo Alexiy.

Memorial services are being held for Solzhenitsyn in Orthodox churches in Russia and abroad. The Coliseum in Rome changed the color of its lighting on the night of August 4 in honor of the writer. Many heads of state have sent their condolences to the writer’s family.
