Fresh Russian Peacekeepers in Sudan
An Il-18 military transport plane took off from Chkalovsky air base outside Moscow on Monday to carry a group of Russian helicopter pilots to Sudan, Interfax-AVN reports, citing aide to the main commander of the Russian Air Force Vladimir Drik. “A scheduled change is underway in Sudan of the personnel of the Russian aviation group that carries out assignments as part of the UN peacekeeping operation. The Il-18 will deliver 80 helicopters to Africa. Another 40 people are flying there August 8 on an Il-76 from Migalovo air base in Tver Region,” Drik said.
The Russian aviation group in Sudan consists of about 120 people on the flight and technical staff, rear personnel and other specialists, as well as four Mi-8MTV helicopters reequipped to meet UN standards. The Russian aviation group transports military observers from the UN mission in Sudan. It also carries or accompanies cargo, organized search and rescue missions and performs other functions. The first Russian peacekeepers arrived in Sudan in 2006.
