Abkhazia Rejected German Peace Plan
Georgia’s breakaway Abkhazia has rejected a new peace plan of Germany, RIA Novosti reported with reference to Abkhazia’s President Sergei Bagapsh.
“Georgia is to comply with all agreements that have been signed earlier and stick to the basic Moscow agreement on ceasefire and separation of parties. The return of Georgia’s refugees to Gali region of Abkhazia may happen only after the conflict settlement, but until that time, insisting on the refugees’ return to the remaining districts of Abkhazia is impossible and may lead to war,” Bagapsh declared after meeting Germany’s Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Germany has proposed a new three-stage plan to resolve the conflict of Georgia and Abkhazia. According to German media, its first stage provides for the annual actions aimed at reviving the trust between Georgia and Abkhazia, signing agreement on the force non-use and setting into motion the return of Georgia’s refugees to Abkhazia. The second stage spells out the launch of rebuilding funded by Germany and donor-states, and the third stage is the determination of Abkhazia’s political status.
