Russia, China Displeased Bush Anew
Displeased with Russia’s and China’s vetoes in the Security Council, U.S. President George Bush promised that the United States would independently punish Zimbabwe. The Department of State and the Treasury Department “are now working on potential U.S. action,” the Associated Press reported.
Russia and China blocked in Security Council past week the draft resolution on Zimbabwe that had been initiated by the United States and backed up by Britain. The situation in Zimbabwe “doesn’t threaten regional, the more so international security,” the RF Foreign Ministry commented on the Moscow standing in the Security Council.
The resolution provided for imposing embargo on armaments trade, banning foreign trips of Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and top bureaucrats as well as freezing their accounts with foreign banks. In addition to the Untied States, Britain, France, Belgium, Italy, Panama, Burkina Faso, Croatia and Costa Rica voted for the draft.
Zimbabwe President Mugabe took the sixth oath June 29, 2008, having won the second round of presidential election, where he had been the sole candidate. Quite a few nations criticized the election with the United States and Britain being the most aggressive of them.
