Georgian-American Military Exercises
Immediate Response 2008, joint Georgian-American military exercises, began July 15 at the Georgian Ministry of Defense training center outside Tbilisi, RIA Novosti information agency reports. A total of 1650 soldiers will take part. Besides Georgians and Americans, members of the armed forces of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Ukraine will participate.
The exercises will consist of a peacekeeping mission and a rescue operation. The exercises will last until the end of the month and will take place in two stages. The first will be the development of command skills on the level of an infantry brigade and the second will be rescue work in field conditions.

It has been reported that two American helicopters will be used in the second stage of the exercises. The Georgian Defense Ministry stated in a press release that the exercises cost $8 million and are being fully paid for by the Pentagon.
