Russia to Monitor Space from Tadjikistan
President Dmitry Medvedev has signed an act on ratifying agreements that relate to settlement of Tadjikistan’s debt to Russia, the Kremlin news service reported. Under the agreements of early 2000s, Tadjikistan will transfer to Russia Nurek optical-electronic station designed for space monitoring.
The parties agreed on the debt-settlement procedures in 2004. The amount due to Russia exceeds $305 million, and in exchange for Nurek, Russia will write off over $242 million, while Tadjikistan will invest the remainder to fund Russia’s interest in construction of Sangtudinsk GES-1 hydroelectric plant.

The whereabouts of Nurek station is mountains of southern Tadjikistan. This advantageous location enables it to track satellites at the altitude of up to 40,000 kilometers. The report on the station’s transfer to Russia was signed in Dushanbe in 2005.
