Russia’s Navy Resumed Presence Near Spitsbergen
Russia’s Navy has resumed presence in Spitsbergen area, RIA Novosti reported with reference to the news service of the RF Navy.
“The Navy of Russia has resumed presence of Northern Fleet’s combat vessels in the Arctic area, including Spitsbergen. A big antisubmarine ship, Severomorsk, has arrived in the region and is performing missions there, while Marshal Ustinov guided-weapon cruiser will be in the area after July 17,” the news service specified.

Norway that declared the 200-mile territory around Spitsbergen an exclusive economic zone hinders activities of Russia’s fishermen there despite the special status of archipelago. Russia hasn’t recognized that decision of Norway and Navy’s Commander Vladimir Vysotsky promised to back up fishermen by presence of vessels during the catching season.
