Luzhkov Cares about Food Prices
Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov is calling on the Russian government to turn its attention to a possible sharp growth in prices for imported foods. The rise in oil prices could lead to a shortage of food in Russia, Luzhkov said Friday at a session of the Central Federal District devoted to the development of agriculture.
According to the mayor, the high oil prices make biofuel profitable in the world. If agricultural producers turn to biofuel production, the prices of food imports, “without which we cannot make it,” will increase sharply. “The government has to pay attention to that,” Luzhkov said. He observed that rising prices for building materials also fetter agricultural development, although, the mayor thinks, there is an objective reason for them.
