Russia Convinced Iran Threat Implausible
In spite of the Iranian missile tests in the Persian Gulf, Russia remains the threat posed by Iran is implausible, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told journalists. “The tests that took place in Iran only confirm that Iran now has missiles with a range of 2000 km.,” he explained. That, Lavrov continued, confirms Russia’s conviction that the third site of U.S. antimissile defense, now being set up in Eastern Europe is not necessary for monitoring or reacting to “those specific missiles of that range.”
Lavrov emphasized that Russia is convinced that the threat posed by Iran is implausible as motivation to locate elements of the antimissile system in Eastern Europe. It became known today that the Iranian Armed Forces has conducted new trials of land-to-sea missiles with a range of 350 km. The Iranian Army also carried out on operation in the Persian Gulf. Before that, successful launches of Shahab 3 missiles, which have a range of about 200 km. (that is, capable of hitting Israel) were carried out as part of military exercises on July 9.
Ali Shirazi, aide to the spiritual leader of Iran, stated recently that, in the event of a military attack, the first targets for retaliatory attacks would be Tel Aviv and American ships in the Persian Gulf, as well as American objects throughout the world. The United States has accused Iran of supporting rebels in Iraq and trying to create atomic weapons. Teheran denies the accusations. In spite of the assurances of American leaders that Washington does not have plans for a military strike against Iran, many analysts think that another war in the Persian Gulf is entirely possible.
