Russian Rhetoric Too Much for Czechs
The Czech Republic expressed protest against the harshly-worded statements being made by Russia after the signing of the agreement on the placement of elements of the American missile defense system in that country, Reuters reports. The Czech Republic has “concerns over continued excessive rhetoric of the Russian Federation towards the Czech Republic and threats by some Russian official representatives in this sense,” says an official statement of the Czech Defense Ministry, made after a meeting with the head of the international treaty department of the Russian Foreign Ministry Evgeny Buzhinsky.
"Some of the statements and the form of their presentation are perceived in the Czech Republic as an interference with internal political affairs," the statement continues. On July 9, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Russia will respond to the location of components of the U.S. missile defense system near its borders “not diplomatically, but by military methods.” Diplomats have stated that Russia is forced “to take adequate measures to compensate for the potential threat created to its national security.”

On July 8, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg signed an agreement on the location of American radar for the new missile defense system in the Czech Republic. The radar will be installed in the village of Brdy, 90 km. from Prague, to watch for possible attacks by Iran.
