Construction Halted on Nuclear Waste Dump
Construction of the first dry storage facility for spent nuclear fuel in Russia has been temporarily halted in Krasnoyarsk Territory, a Rosatom source has told RIA Novosti information agency. The state Spetsstroi has been working on the facility at the Mining and Chemicals Combine since April 1.
Until this year, the construction of storage facilities was financed by the Rosenergoatom concern. Now money for that purpose is allocated under a federal target program. Along with that change, the annual coefficient to offset inflation was changed, leading to underfinancing.

The source at Rosatom said that the corporation offered to sign a new contract with Spetsstroi with different financing conditions, but Spetsstroi declined to do so. Now Rosatom has announced a competition for the completion of the storage facility. Spetsstroi has the right to participate in that competition. Experts say the three-month delay will not critically affect the project, which has a completion date of 2011. Up to 28,000 tons of spent nuclear fuel from energy plants will be held in the facility.
