MI5 Spots Russia’s Govt Action in Litvinenko Murder
The Newsnight program of BBC reported Monday about the involvement of Russia’s government in mysterious death of former FSB officer Alexander Litvinenko.
Ex-officer of FSB and then fierce critic of the Kremlin, Alexander Litvinenko fled to Britain in 2000 to die of poisoning by polonium 210 in November of 2006.
According to BBC political observer Mark Urban, Russia’s state had been directly involved in Litvinenko’s assassination. Urban made the respective statement referring to the high-ranked anonymous sources of Newsnight.
“We very strongly believe the Litvinenko case to have had some state involvement,” Newsnight quoted one of the high-ranked sources with British intelligence as saying.
According to Newsnight, the MI5 officers are sure they prevented an attempt to kill Boris Berezovsky past June and that attempt had been also sanctioned by the Kremlin.
Russia has always denied the involvement of its secret services in Litvinenko’s assassination. The U.K. detectives blame the murder on former FSB officer Andrei Lugovoy, demanding his extradition. As to Lugovoy, who is the member of the lower house of Russia’s parliament today, he speaks of the possible involvement of Boris Berezovsky in that crime.
