Atomic Plants under Disinformation Attack
Rosatom has released a statement reading “On Sunday, June 15, the latest informational provocation was made in relation to the population of the northwestern and southern regions of the country. First, false electronic messages (spam) were sent out as if from the atomic energy and industry press center with the headline ‘Accident at the Leningrad Atomic Power Plant.’ Later, another falsified message was distributed through the same spamming method as though from the electronic address of Ecological Watch on the North Caucasus, a public organization concerned with the protection of nature in the south of Russia, in which it was claimed that a significant increase in background radiation is being observed in the area of the Volgodonskaya atomic energy plant (Rostov Region).”
The agency stated that “In reality, all atomic plants on the territory of Russia (including the Leningrad and Volgodonskaya plants) are functioning absolutely normally. Background radiation at the grounds of the plants corresponds to the natural levels characteristic of those areas.” The state corporation maintains that the messages are knowingly inaccurate. It noted that Andrey Rudomakha, leader of Ecological Watch on the North Caucasus, has officially disavowed the press release issued in the name of his organization.
A similar informational attack was made on the Leningrad plant at the beginning of the month through span and SMS and such an attack was made on the Volgodonskaya plant in the summer of last year, causing a wave of concern in the region.
