Georgia Says Russia Launched Military Base in Abkhazia
Georgia has blamed on Russia the launch of a military base in Abkhazia without agreeing on the issue with Tbilisi. The base opened near Agubedia village of Abkhazia’s Ochamchir district.
Major military weapons and equipment, including tanks and howitzers, arrived at the base yesterday, said Tornike Kilanava, who is the spokesman of Abkhazia's Autonomous Republic of Georgia, which is opposed to the breakaway and self-proclaimed Abkhazia. Those armaments are banned in the conflict area, as they are attacking, not the defense ones, Kilanava specified.
According to Kilanava, location of the former training center and today’s military base in Agubedia is strategic. It enables to control entry and exit from the upper and lower Gali district of Abkhazia that borders Georgia.
Russia’s Defense Ministry hasn’t commented on the issue yet.
