NATO Secretary General Arrives in Kiev
Led by Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the NATO delegation will visit Ukraine June 16 and 17, news service of Ukrainian president announced.
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko invited the NATO delegation in an effort to proceed to extensive contacts of NATO and Ukraine aimed at bringing momentum to their political dialogue.
During the visit, the NATO experts will focus on Ukrainian progress in executing the 2008 action plan in view of the country’s application for the Membership Action Plan. The NATO-Ukrainian commission will sit one of these two days, and its meeting will be attended by ambassadors and Ukrainian foreign and defense ministers. The country’s president, Viktor Yushchenko will meet with Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and the delegation.
During the April summit in Bucharest, the allies shelved the MAP applications of Ukraine and Georgia, specifying, however, that both of them will be the NATO members in future and that NATO will again focus on the issue this December. Russia is perhaps the most uncompromising opponent to the eastward expansion of NATO.
