Demand for American Husbands Falls
Russian women are applying for American visas for marriage in ever decreasing numbers, says U.S. consul general in Moscow Kurt Amend. “There were 1945 granted in 2006, 1575 in 2007 and 616 this year. So, you see, the number of applications is decreasing,” Amend said told the Interfax information agency. “I cannot explain the reason,” he added.
Amend also said that thousands of U.S. citizens live permanently in Russia. He estimated their number at 15,000, but added that he did not have exact data, since Americans are not required to register with the consulate. They are, however, encouraged to do so. Amend said the Americans living in Russia have business or family ties to the country and said that many of them “are in love with the country.”
When asked about the visa problems of Americans living in Russia, he noted that changes in legislation in October of last year caught many Americans by surprise. He also said that the consulate urges all Americans to follow Russian visa rules very carefully.
