Detectives Prevented Terrorist Actions in Moscow Metro
Terrorist actions planned to be staged in the Moscow metro and in the cities and towns of Caucasus Mineral Waters during May holidays have been prevented, Mayak Broadcaster reported today with reference to Alexander Bortnikov, chief of the National Counter-Terrorist Committee.
Alexander Bortnikov, who is also the director of the country’s Federal Security Service (FSB), made the respective statement during today’s meeting of the National Counter-Terrorism Committee.
A string of explosions in the Moscow metro rocked the city a few years ago. A metro car exploded in early 2004 between Avtozavodskaya and Paveletskaya stations of Zamoskvoretskaya line. Suicide terrorist Anzor Izhaev, 21, set off a self-made bomb, killing 41 people. Over 250 passengers suffered in that tragedy.
A bomb believed to have been set off by a female suicide bomber exploded near Rizhskaya station half a year later, August 31, 2004. The terrorists had no time to descend to the metro but roughly four dozens were at the square in time of explosion. The bomb killed eight, including the terrorists, and injured 30.
