Russia Warned Ukraine Against Unilateral Actions for Black Sea Fleet
Ukraine should refrain from taking any unilateral actions in respect of the RF Black Sea Fleet, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters in the Leningrad region’s Strelnya June 6, 2008.
Pursuant to the bilateral agreement of Russia and Ukraine, the RF Black Sea Fleet will be deployed in Ukrainian territory till 2017. The document provides for the optional prolongation, but Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has ordered already to shape the bill on terminating the agreement from 2017.
“Arranging the withdrawal of the Black Sea Fleet before the agreement expires is by far not the approach that we would like to have from our partners,” Lavrov said by results of the meeting of Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev and Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko.
The unilateral steps made contrary to the agreements “don’t add stability to relations,” Russia’s minister specified.
