Russia Not to Enforce Friendship Withdrawal on Ukraine
The recent statement of the RF State Duma on the possible denunciation of Russia-Ukraine’s Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership could be viewed as the pressure that Russia is putting on Ukraine, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday.
The countries inked the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership in Kiev May 31, 1997 and the document took effect April 1, 1999.
The lower house of the RF parliament, the State Duma, passed yesterday a resolution specifying the possible denunciation of the treaty should Ukraine be granted the Membership Action Plan (MAP) of NATO. Russia will view Ukraine’s accession to NATO as the unilateral withdrawal from the treaty, the State Duma members pointed out.
The State Duma’s resolution is of ultimatum nature, it’s nothing else but the pressure put on the country and Ukraine won't take it, said Vasily Kirilich, briefer of Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry. The treaty’s dissolution may destabilize the security system in Europe, it will materially aggravate the relations of Russia and Ukraine and the world community won’t support it, Kirilich predicted.
