Moscow to Host Eurovision, Half of Russians Said
Nearly half of polled Russians (43 percent) said that Moscow should host Eurovision 2009, but 18 percent preferred St. Petersburg and 5 percent favored Sochi, according to the poll of All-Russia’s Public Opinion Center.
The number of respondents choosing Moscow and St. Petersburg for Eurovision Song Contest is equal in the North-West Federal District (from 31 percent to 32 percent).

Asked about the recent sport victories and the Eurovision triumph of Russia, 39 percent said they were the result of good work of the nation, while another 38 percent attributed them to “the beginning of good time for Russia, when the country is rising from knees and the better time is ahead.” Nor more than 10 percent thought those achievements were mere luck and 4 percent spotted the signs of corruption and covert deals in them.

Each fourth Russian (25 percent) watched the Eurovision final, nearly two-thirds didn’t watch it but learnt the results from news programs. Some 9 percent said they knew nothing about the event.

Of interest is that Dima Bilan, who beat 24 contestants to give Russia its first Eurovision victory with a rock ballad "Believe" chose Moscow for the next Eurovision.

All-Russia’s Center for Public Opinion Studies held its poll May 31 to June 1, covering 1,600 respondents in 153 settlements of 46 regions of Russia. The statistic error doesn’t exceed 3.4 percent.
