Russians Won $4.3mln in Strasbourg in 2007
The European Court of Human Rights committed Russia in 2007 to pay ˆ4.3 million to the RF citizens that had been illegally brought to account, Russia’s Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika announced Tuesday during the sitting of the prosecutors’ board, Interfax reported.
Roughly a fourth of the Russians rehabilitated by the European Court were under detention. “This situation results from the blunt flaws of preliminary investigation,” the prosecutor general said, calling on his subordinates to strengthen control over observance of human rights and freedoms.
The Russians won over ˆ2 million by court actions in Strasbourg in 2007, Natalia Zyabkina, who stands for Russia in the Strasbourg Court, said earlier.
As to Russia’s courts, they upheld more than 500 compensatory actions for damages caused by enforcement authorities in 2007, Chaika said. Some 94 billion rubles were claimed from Russia’s treasury overall.
