Manchester Wins League of Champions
Manchester United has become the winner of the League of Champions for 2007-2008. In the final match, which took place in Moscow on May 21, the Manchester club triumphed over its English opponent Chelsea in a penalty shootout, in which Nikolas Anelka made the decisive error. The first overtime ended in a 1:1 tie. Manchester’s Cristiano Ronaldo scored the first point in the 22nd minute. Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard also distinguished himself in the first period.
Chelsea dominated the second period and the ball hit the goalpost after one attack by forward Didier Drogba. Lampard had a chance to make a goal in overtime, but he hit the crossbar with the ball. Chelsea was down to ten men several minutes before the end of the overtime after Drogba was given a red card for striking Nemanja Vidic in the face.
Ronaldo made the first error. Chelsea’s John Terry made five shots but was unable to make a goal. Manchester’s Anderson, Chelsea’s Salomon Kalou and Manchester’s Ryan Giggs also made shots. Chelsea’s Anelka made the decisive shot, which was parried by Edwin Van der Sar. The shootout ended 6:5 in Manchester’s favor.
This is the third time Manchester has won the cup. Its previous wins were in 1968 and 1999.
