Russia Ranks at the Bottom of Peaceful Nations List
For the second year running, Russia is at the bottom of the Global Peace Index, which was released May 20 to rank nations in terms how peaceful they are.
Russia is the 131st of 140 nations ranked by experts of Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), which is the division of The Economist. Only Lebanon, North Korea, Central African Republic, Chad, Israel, Afghanistan, Sudan, Somali and Iraq are less peaceful than Russia.
Russia was put in the 118th place of 121 nations past year. But it would climb from the fourth to the fifth place from the end should the ranking omit new countries.
Other big economies, the United States and China, didn't win the most peaceful status either. They were scored 97 and 67 respectively.
The ranking’s newcomer, Iceland tops the list, while last year’s leader Norway sank to the 3rd position, having yielded to Denmark in addition to Iceland. New Zealand, Japan, Ireland, Portugal, Finland, Luxembourg and Austria are also in the league of ten most peaceful nations.
The study of peaceful nations was compiled in view of a few factors, including the number of enforcement and military personnel per each 100,000 residents, the percent of defense costs in the country’s budget, the number of prisoners, the crime level, the use of force to disseminate protest rallies, etc.
