Moscow Police Shifted to Emergency Mode of Operation
Actions of extra safety have been taken in Moscow airports for May 19 through 23, when the British fans arrive in the city for the match of the UEFA Champions League.
Together with other airport services, the police shifted to emergency operation mode for May 19 through 23, said people in the news service of Moscow Interior Department for Air and Water Transport, specifying that Moscow airports – Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo – are ready for Britain’s fans of Chelsea and Manchester United that arrive in the city today. All airport halls and premises (perimeter) are under continuous video surveillance of police and security services.
Some 970 busses were provided to deliver the fans to the places of residence, Moscow Main Interior Department (GUVD) Deputy Chief Vyacheslav Kozlov said earlier. As many as 270 officers of traffic police will ensure smooth passage of busses to the places of fans’ residence, the official specified. The last jet with fans will leave Moscow May 23, 2008.
Roughly 7,000 police officers and interior military were attracted to ensure order in the city. “The police will be wherever the fans are,” Kozlov vowed.
Over 50,000 Britain’s fans are expected to arrive for the final match of the UEFA Champions League that Manchester United and Chelsea will play in Moscow May 21. Most of the fans, up to 40,000, will arrive independently, but 6,000 to 7,000 fans from each side will come via the tourist firms. Seventy hotels that are under special control of police have been booked to accommodate Britain’s fans.
