Putin Names a Government Presidium
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has signed a resolution creating a government presidium – a special body within the cabinet. It will be made up of over half the cabinet members. Specifically, it will consist of the deputy prime ministers and the heads of the larger ministries. Denis Peskov, the prime minister’s press secretary, said that three-fifths of the government members would be members of the presidium. That is the number needed for a quorum. He said the presidium would be “a kind of staff for coordinating efforts and actions that are taken by specific individual agencies.”
Peskov said the presidium would meet irregularly. Putin suggested creating a presidium to increase the work of the government last week. He suggested that it meet once a week to discuss important issues in the development of the country. Full meetings of the government will take place about once a month.

Besides the prime minister, the presidium will consist of First Deputy Prime Minister Victor Zubkov, First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov, Deputy Prime Alexander Zhukov, Deputy Prime Sergey Ivanov, Deputy Prime Igor Sechin, Deputy Prime and chief of the governmental staff Sergey Sobyanin, Deputy Prime and Minister of Finance Alexey Kudrin, Minister of Health and Social Development Tatyana Golikova, Minister of Agriculture Alexey Gordeev, Minister of Regional Development Dmitry Kozak, Minister for Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov, Minister Economic Development Elvira Nabiullina, Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliev and Ministry of Defense and Anatoly Serdyukov.
