Sukhoi Superjet 100 Takes Off
The Sukhoi Superjet 100 short-haul liner made its first flight on May 19. The test flight took place in Komsomolsk-on-Amur and lasted 40 minutes. It was originally scheduled to occur before the end of 2007, but was postponed. The Sukhoi Superjet 100 is the only completely new airplane created in Russia (not the Soviet Union). The cost of its development, which began in 2000, was $1.4 billion.
Airlines have already ordered 73 Superjets. The catalog price for one jet is reported to be $27 million. The plane is distinguished by its efficiency. It is expected to replace Tu-134 and Tu-154 models. It is also likely to enjoy high demand abroad. It will beproduced in two basic models, one with 78 seats, the other with 98 seats. Its range is 3120 kilometers.
