Ukraine Formally Joined WTO
Ukraine has become the full-fledged member of WTO. The protocol on its joining the Marrakesh Agreement Establishing the World Trade Organization was inked in Geneva February 5, 2008. The country's parliament Supreme Rada ratified it April 10 and the document took effect May 16.
Ukraine had sought the GATT/WTO accession since November 30, 1993. Now Kiev is due to transfer to the WTO 350,000 Swiss francs as the one-time payment and membership contribution calculated starting from May to the end of this year. The country’s budget appropriates roughly $400,000 for this purpose.
Ukrainian parliament ratified the WTO protocol on April 10, 2008; 411 MPs voted for it vs. the required majority of 226. The WTO membership enjoyed the support of the Regions Party, Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko, Our-Ukraine-People’s Self-Defense and Litvin Bloc, but the communists refrained from voting on the issue.
Ukrainian government was committed to endorse an action program to adjust the economy to the WTO requirements within a month. President Viktor Yushchenko inked a ratifying decree on WTO on April 16.
Ukraine is the 152nd member of WTO.
