Russia Offers CFE Compromise to NATO
Chief of Russia’s General Staff Army General Yuri Baluevsky has made to NATO a compromise proposal on the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (or CFE Treaty).
During the news conference in Brussels, Baluevsky suggested cancelling all restrictions that ban from building up military forces in definite regions, the so-called flanks. The army general urged to replace the notion of southern and northern flanks by a new term, whereby a flank will extend to all territory of Russia under the treaty.

NATO spokesmen said they are ready for any compromising proposals of Russia but specified that Moscow has provided no official plan yet.

Russia suspended the CFE Treaty participation in late 2007, viewing it as response to Washington plans to station components of missile-defense shield in Europe. The CFE Treaty that covers five categories of armaments, including tanks, combat armored vehicles, artillery, combat planes and helicopters, was sealed by the NATO and Warsaw Treaty nations far back November 19, 1990 and took effect November 1992.
