Soccer: Zenith Wins UEFA Cup
St. Petersburg Zenith has won the 2007-2008 UEFA Cup. The Russian team beat the Glasgow Ranger 2:0. This is Zenith’s first time to win the European cup, and Russia’s second time, after CSKA won it three years ago. The Russian team had the advantage from the beginning. Andrey Arshavin was able to open the scoring in the 4th minute. The Zenith forward received the ball from Konstantin Zyryanov and shot for the nearest corner, although he missed. The Russians attacked harder and more often than their opponents.
The ball fell on the hand of Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot late in the first half, but referee Peter Frojdfeldt did not call it. At the beginning of the second, Denisov was subject to a similar circumstance, which also passed without penalty. Several seconds before, Russian goalkeeper Vyacheslav Malafeev had repulsed a dangerous strike from the Rangers’ Jean-Claude Darcheville. Not long afterwards, Igor Denisov shot one at Rangers’ goalkeeper Neil Alexander.
Denisov scored the first goal in the 72nd minute. He went one-on-one with Alexander after receiving the ball from Arshavin. The Rangers regained the ball several minutes before the end of match, but Nacho Novo overshot. Zyryanov made the last goal in the third (and last) minute of injury time after receiving the ball from Fatih Tekke.
