Alexy II Endorsed New ROCOR Hierarch
Chaired by Patriarch of Moscow and All-Russia Alexy II, the Holy Synod of Russian Orthodox Church endorsed Wednesday the election of Archbishop Hilarion of Sydney, Australia and New Zealand as new hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR), RIA Novosti reported May 14.
Whereby we uphold the resolution of the Archbishop Synod of Russian Church Outside Russia on electing His Eminence Archbishop Hilarion of Sydney, Australia and New Zealand as its Hierarch, Metropolitan of East America and New York, the Holy Synod said in the statement released via the web of Moscow Patriarchy.
The May 12 decree of Patriarch Alexy II dignifies Archbishop Hilarion as metropolitan due to electing him the ROCOR’s new hierarch. The enthronement ceremony is slated for May 18.
Previous hierarch of ROCOR Metropolitan Laurus died March 16, 2008.
Under the Act on Canon Communication of May 17, 2007 that revived the unity of Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia with Moscow Patriarchy, the ROCOR hierarch is elected by ROCOR’s Archbishop Council but requires the endorsement of Patriarch of Moscow and All-Russia and of the Holy Synode of Russian Orthodox Church.
