Unite against Aggression, Says Pres.
“For us living now, the feat of the war generation is the absolute reference for serving the ideals of freedom, justice and good. They have always helped withstand aggression and violence. And in our days, they should united the international community to prevent the spread of new and very frightening threats,” Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said at a reception in the Kremlin dedicated to the 63rd anniversary of victory in World War II.
Medvedev pointed to the political lessons of the war. “The lessons of 1945 have no expiration date,” he said. “They, like the colossal human losses of the war years, teach us that conflict and violence lead to catastrophe. People pay for the bloody mistakes of politicians. Old people, women and children pay. Those mistakes lie on the shoulders of later generations as a heavy burden. For decades, whole countries and continents could not overcome the terrible consequences of those tragic years.”

“Our people fulfilled its historic role with true magnanimity,” Medvedev continued. “It not only freed its own country, it saved the world from Nazism. Gave freedom to the states of Europe. Predetermined the course of history for decades to come.” The Russian president wished the veterans present health and prosperity. “You are worthy keepers of the historic truth about the war,” he told them. “You have borne personal witness all your lives.”
