Tarpishchev Names Olympic Tennis Team
President of the Russian Tennis Federation Shamil Tarpishchev has named the Russian men’s and women’s singles tennis players for the 2008 Olympics. Tarpishchev said that the teams can be considered formed and changes will take place only under unforeseen circumstances. Nikolay Davydenko, Mikhail Youzhny, Igor Andreev and Dmitry Tursunov will be on the men’s team at the Beijing Games, and Maria Sharapova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Anna Chakvetadze and Elena Dementyeva will play on the women’s team.
Tarpishchev, who is also the captain of the men’s and women’s Davis Cup and Federation Cup teams, said that he chose the members of the Olympic teams strictly according to sporting principles. Players with the highest world ratings were chosen for the four places on each team.
Tarpishchev has not made the final decision on doubles yet. Among the men, one pair will be made up of players who will also play singly, and another pair will be of players who specialize in that form of the game. Women’s pairs are already decided. Dinara Safina and Vera Zvonareva will make up one pair and Kuznetsova will play with either Chakvetadze or Dementyeva. Thus, Sharapova will play only singly at the Olympics.
