The Russian Government Has Resigned
In accordance with the Constitution of the Russian Federation, head of the government Viktor Zubkov has signed a resolution on the resignation of the cabinet of ministers. The president is now to appoint an acting prime minister and ask the government to act in their posts until a new cabinet can be appointed. The candidate for new prime minister has to be presented to the State Duma within two weeks. The Duma then has one week to consider the candidacy and make a decision on him.
Dmitry Medvedev stated in December that he would offer Vladimir Putin the office of prime minister. He confirmed that intention again after his victory at the polls. The majority of members of the Duma, including those from the United Russia faction, expressed their approval of that decision.
In 2004, the State Duma confirmed Mikhail Fradkov as prime minister a week after Putin’s inauguration. The formation of his cabinet was completed by the end of the month.
