White House Urges Russia Not to Provoke Tension in Abkhazia
The White House spokeswoman Dana Perino has urged Russia to “cease from further provocations” in Georgia’s breakaway republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, France Presse reported.
Strengthening the contingent of Russia’s peacekeepers in the region and the April 20 short-down of Georgia’s unmanned drone in Abkhazia’s airspace were the provocative actions of Russia, according to Perino.

The statement of Perino could be viewed as the manifestation of the U.S. solidarity with the opinion of Georgia’s authorities claiming that Russia’s MiG-29 hit the second spy drone of Georgia. Officers of Russia’s Air Force have refused to assume responsibility for the accident.

“In contacts with both the Russian and Georgian governments at the highest levels, the United States has firmly reiterated our support for Georgia’s territorial integrity and strongly urged Russia to deescalate and reverse its measures,” Perino told the reporters. The official also called on Georgia to continue to refrain from any military actions for settling the conflicts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
