Captain of Natl. Hockey Team Chosen
Alexey Morozov, forward for Ak Bars Kazan, has been appointed captain of the Russian national hockey team by head coach Vyacheslav Bykov for the world championship, which begin May 2 in Quebec and Halifax. SKA St. Petersburg right wing Maxim Sushinsky and Washington Capitals forward Sergey Federov were named Morozov's assistants. Morozov was also captain during the last round of the European tournament.
Morozov did not play in the last matches for Bykov against Switzerland (6:2) and Canada (4:1) because of a knee injury. Two days before the beginning of the world competition, he recovered and rejoined the group. Morozov is in a trio with Sergey Zinovyev and Ilya Kovalchuk.
Alexander Ovechkin trained with the team for the first time. He was placed in a trio with Sergey Fedorov and Alexander Semin. According to the official site of the Russian Hockey Federation, Fedor Fedorov and Alexander Radulov have been taken off the active team and placed in the reserves. Goalkeeper Semen Varlamov received an injury to his foot during the last practice. The degree of seriousness of his injury is unknown.
Russia plays its first world championship match against Italy on the evening of May 2.
