Abramovich Lawyer Faults Berezovsky Suit
Businessman Roman Abramovich's lawyer, Andrew Popplewell, has called the suit filed against his client by Boris Berezovsky “without foundation,” The Times wrote on Tuesday. A preliminary hearing in the case took place the day before. Abramovich is Berezovsky's former business partner. Berezovsky claims that Abramovich used threats to force him to sell a number of assets below their value in the early 2000s.
Berezovsky is demanding compensation for the sale of share packages belonging to him and his partner Badri Patarkatsishvili in the Sibneft oil company, Rusal aluminum company and ORT television channel. The monetary value of the compensation may reach £2 billion.

Both Berezovsky and Abramovich live and do business, permanently or partially, in Great Britain. The Sunday Times published a list of the United Kingdom's richest people on April 27, in which Abramovich was ranked second with £11.7 billion and Berezovsky 123rd with £667 million.

“We want to know when the oral threats were made so that witnesses could be called if Mr. Berezovsky says they were there. This is basic information that should have been sent to us,” Popplewell stated. “This is a case that cries out for a summary judgment or a strike out.”

Judge David Mackey postponed the examination of the case until the next session, giving the sides time to prepare then necessary formalities.
