Unemployment Lowered to 4.8m
In Russia, the number of unemployed lowered to 4.8 million as of late March of 2008, equaling 6.4 percent of the economically active population, RIA Novosti reported with reference to the data that Russia’s statistics authority Rosstat released on Monday.
But there were some 5.0 million unemployed by the end of February, according to Rosstat. The figure corresponded to 6.6 percent of the country’s work force and exceeded the January indicator of 4.3 million.

In late March, 1.5 million unemployed were registered with the state employment departments and 1.3 million of them were receiving unemployment allowance, Rosstat reported. By late March, Russia had 75.4 million economically active residents, or 53 percent of the population, according to Rosstat.

The number of unemployed in Russia was determined under the methodology of the International Labor Organization.
