NATO Defends Georgia against Caucasus Kosovo
NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has voiced concern about the statement of Russia’s Foreign Ministry related to reviving legal links with Georgia’s breakaway republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
NATO said on Wednesday it was deeply concerned by Russia's desire to revive legal links with neighboring Georgia's breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

"I am deeply concerned by the actions Russia has taken to establish legal links with the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia," Reuters quoted as saying NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. The alliance confirmed the support to Georgia’s territorial integrity at the recent summit in Bucharest, secretary-general emphasized.

"The Russian steps undermine that sovereignty," Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said. "I urge the Russian Federation to reverse these measures, and call on the Georgian authorities to continue to show restraint."

Russia’s Foreign Ministry made a statement Wednesday, specifying the president’s order to shape actions for providing aid to the people in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The move doesn’t mean Russia has opted for the confrontation with Georgia, the ministry pointed out.

Georgian Foreign Ministry rebuffed by calling Russia’s support to Abkhazia and South Ossetia an attempted annexation of those two regions of Georgia.
