U.S. Scientists Critical of Missile Defense Plans
Aggressively promoted by Pentagon, the missile defense system undermines efforts to eliminate real nuclear threats to the United States, Lisbeth Gronlund told lawmakers in Congress, The Associated Press reported.
Having studied the Pentagon plans and the latest tests, a group of prominent scientists concluded that the global missile defense system “offers no prospect of defending the United States from a real-world missile attack.” In this respect, they questioned whether Pentagon had intentionally misled the public about the system’s capabilities.

Lisbeth Gronlund, who is a senior scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists, made the statement at a House oversight hearing on the missile defense program. The hearing was initiated by the panel’s chairman Rep. John Tierney, who questioned the extent of missile defense spending. The senator referred to congressional projections of $213 billion to $277 billion for the program from now to 2025.

The United States intends to construct a radar station in Czech Republic and station 10 interceptors in Poland to defend against potential attacks of the so-called hostile states as Iran and North Korea. Russia strongly opposes those plans of Washington, viewing them as a threat to security.
