Lavrov: Russia, the U.S. Haven’t Agreed on Missile Defense
Russia hasn’t changed its views on the U.S. third position site of the missile defense in Europe. Therefore, speaking of any agreement of Moscow and Washington would be premature, the RF Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
The Declaration on Strategic Frame of Russia’s-U.S. Relations that has been recently passed in Sochi specifies vitality of the missile defense issues, Lavrov said in the interview with Nikkei newspaper, which text has been released through the web of the RF Foreign Ministry. In the document, Russia explicitly spelled out its disagreement with stationing the third position site and won’t withdraw its alternative to this solution from the negotiating table, the foreign minister emphasized.
Lavrov recalled the package proposal made by President Vladimir Putin in summer of 2007 and providing for opposing the potential threats on truly collective grounds with equal involvement of Russia, the United States, Europe and other nations concerned.
Washington has ignored Moscow’s anxiety about the third position site. So it is too early to speak of reaching any agreement. The task of the experts is to thoroughly study all proposals, so that the mutually acceptable decisions could be finally attained, the minister made clear, promising that the dialogue will continue.
