U.N. Security Council to Extend UNOMIG Mandate in Abkhazia
The U.N. Security Council meets Tuesday to adopt a resolution on extending the mandate of the United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) till October of 2008.
The Security Council met Monday to canvass the report of U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the situation in the conflict area, which advises to prolong the UNOMIG mandate in the conflict area of Georgia and Abkhazia. As a whole, the situation is stable there, the report says.

But the views of Russia’s delegation are different. The situation is tense, said Russia’s Ambassador-at-Large Vladislav Chernov, who heads the RF delegation at the consultations. Chernov didn’t directly challenge the opinion of the U.N. secretary-general but specified that the conclusions whereby the situation had stabilized and there were no serious incidents could be mostly referred to the winter season, especially for Kodori Gorge.

The situation will soon aggravate in Kodori Gorge, Chernov warned. It is known that quite a few representatives of Georgia’s enforcement bodies station in Kodori Gorge, the official pointed out.
