Russia to Pay World Bank Loans in Advance
Russia will probably pay off the World Bank loans in June of 2008; the amount of $3 billion will be settled ahead of schedule, Deputy Finance Minister Dmitry Pankin told reporters in Washington.
We will probably be paying off in advance only the single-currency loans, the deputy minister specified, adding that the matter at stake is settling $3 billion in June, while Russia owes some $4.5 billion to the World Bank.
Pankin attended in Washington the Spring Meetings of chief officials of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
Although the early payment wasn’t discussed during the event, Pankin went on, the respective mutual agreements have been attained. As to the multicurrency loans, verifying their amounts isn’t easy, so it was decided to pay off only the single-currency loans in advance, the official explained.
People in the RF Finance Ministry said earlier that they would start by paying off the loans for implemented projects. As to the new loans, Russia is eyeing the chance to attract the World Bank consultants but on a gratis basis (payment against services) and will attract loans at minimum, Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin said a day before.
