UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on Russia to increase its contribution to the organization’s budget. According to Secretary-General, Russia is one of the major actors in the UN peace-keeping missions, and one of the key sponsors of the organization.
Mr Ban deems that with Russia’s economy developing, the country will manage to boost its investments in the organization. Reuters reports that Secretary-General said he made this point during his talks with the Russian officials.
So far Mr Ban has been on a visit to Moscow, which ends on April 11. This is his first official visit to Russia since assuming office. Received by Russia’s president Vladimir Putin yesterday, Mr Ban conducted talks featuring the current activities and prospects of the UN, as well as crucial international problems.
Secretary-General negotiated with president-elect Dmitry Medvedev too, a wide range of issues discussed, for example climate change, war on terror, the UN Security Council reform.
It need be said that earlier Russia’s government took a decision to allocate a targeted $500,000 lump sum to the UN Voluntary Fund for financing the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
To conclude with, Russia, along with such states as the USA, France, Great Britain, Germany and the Netherlands, turned into an international donor of the Special Tribunal. This body was set up after the UN Security Council resolution passed on May 30, 2007 and is mandated to institute criminal proceedings against those suspected of assassinating Lebanon’s ex-Prime Minister, Rafik Hariri.
